ACI Women & Men Match Race
22.05.2009

CRES, 22ND – 24TH MAY 2009

The ACI Women & Men Match Race will take place at the ACI Marina Cres from 22nd to 24th May 2009 with women and men crews racing together in a match race.

This is the first in the series of regattas that the newly opened ACI Sailing Center within the ACI Marina Cres is going to organize.

The crews will race on the Jeanneau One Design 35 Type sailing boats (JOD 35). The characteristicsof this race is the scoring system. As women and men crews are racing among themselves, the whole results obtained are scored in the so called „Open race“, but at the same time, the scored ranking of the women crews is to be evaluated at a separate Women Match Race Ranking List.

The aim is to support the growth of the women match race sailing crews by framing their growth in organising and attending such races, and being included in the scoring system and the ranking list as well.

The first women crew was established within the ACI Club and the YC Croatia as early as1993. Since then, in this fifteen-year long period, about ten women crews have been actively racing. Some of them have made a pause, some of them are in full swing…

The launching of the ACI Marina Cres Match Race is in fact a continued support that ACI is giving in promoting the growth of sailing as a sport in Croatia.

Some of the contestants’ statements after the last day

Kliba

Dario Kliba:
Too much wind! They even raised a flag after the second match signaling that we cannot sail with the spinnakers any more. After that the matches lost their charm. It was a very hard day for all of us, especially for those who entered the semifinals. Hats off to them!

Adam Minoprio:
It was very windy. The racing was really exciting because of the shifty wind conditions - very tricky but same for everyone. We lost couple of matches, and now we're out of the regatta. I must confess we are a bit disappointed... Those who made it to the semifinals really did a good job, and I think it is going to be hard to win.

Sergey Musikhin:
Wind in Split today was almost the same as the winds that blow in Russia. The regatta was a first-class event and we are very glad for being a part of it. We would also like to come again next year, if you invite us.
